Coin Question
i recently received an order from apmex, ive ordered from them many times and have always got good service and been real happy. this time i bought some 'culls'--some old silver dollars. i like them, and you often get some real neat coins, some are beat up and some are in real good shape.
this time when i opened up the little plastic holder and looked at them, one of them was real different. it had a 1921 date and was in pretty decent shape, just needs a cleaning, but the back was totally smooth. no marks or indentations, no design at all. it was not worn off or sanded or shaved, its totally smooth like a blank, i looked with a magnifying glass to check. its just about as heavy as all the others, it feels the same but it is a tiny bit lighter---but the back side is just smooth. do i have a dud? im just real curious. thanks in advance jazzy |
Re: Coin Question
I hate when people don't answer me....so I'll answer.
I have no experience with anything like what you're describing. Sorry I cannot help. Call APMEX...ask 'em what the hell they sold you. The onus is on them to let you know the product they sent you is legit. |
Re: Coin Question
Hey, Jazzy:
Can you post a picture of the reverse and obverse of the coin? I would recommend you find a scale, your dealer will have one to determine the weight. If it weighs the same or about 26.73 grams you have a full weight coin, and possibly an error. Post the pics if you can and I will help if I can. The Great Ag |
Re: Coin Question
Jazzy, the coin you describe would be categorized as a cull. Since that is what you ordered, I don't see anything wrong here. You may have to lower your expectations next time you order culls. :albertein

Re: Coin Question
here is a picture of a morgan error like what u are talking about does it look like the one in this message board pic at pcg message board
if so it is a error http://forums.collectors.com/message...keyword1=blank |
Re: Coin Question
HVACTEC, the one you pointed out has a rim. That's a true error. If Jazzy's has a rim, I would also suspect a blank error. But if there's no rim (on the "flat" side), then I would imagine it's nothing more than some serious wear and tear on that one side.

Re: Coin Question
jello,
im not disappointed, im just curious as ive never received one like this in any purchases ive made. i actually think its kinda neat, simply because it is different. with buying culls, i have no expectations to be lowered, really. im sorry, but i dont have a camera--DH has it and he is on and elk hunt and wont be back for a week. HVACTEC, it has the same face of the coin on that site, i can clearly see the grains of wheat coming from the crown, the (what looks like) flowers, ivy leaves, the curls in the hair, slight raised rim on the front but the back is just blank. in comparing it to another 1921 coin, it is slightly thinner. i dont have a scale that would do the job, but i think i know someone who does, so i will go see them and check it out. it is so interesting...when i look at the back side with a magnifier, i can see no signs of shearing or cutting or shaving, its just pretty smooth and even, but it has no lip or ring around the back side, as was mentioned in the link that HVACTEC provided. maybe its just a dud, maybe someone did something to it, but i still think it is interesting. thank you all so much for your comments. when DH gets home ill have him take a picture and post it if he can. my dads a coin collector so ill probably just send it to him for the fun of it. now i know why he is hooked on coins. damn! i think i caught the bug. oh, in my culls, i also got a really beautiful 1896 that looks like it has barely been touched by anything--it looks brand new----gosh, its gorgeous! dads gonna get that one, too. thanks again, you all have been really helpful. jazzy |
Re: Coin Question
Jazzy, don't forget that 2 APMEX people are on this board so maybe they'll drop in. If not maybe drop them a PM and ask them to drop on by this thread and comment.
